Slower, focused treatment for the tension that hasn't shifted — stubborn knots, tight shoulders and long-standing back tightness.
Some tension doesn't shift. You stretch it, you foam roll it, you sleep on it — and the same tight band across your shoulders or the same ache in your lower back is still there a month later. Deep tissue massage is slower, more focused work aimed squarely at that kind of long-standing tightness.
The difference from a general massage is pace and depth. Rather than working broadly across the whole body, deep tissue treatment spends time on the specific areas that are actually restricted, working gradually through the layers of muscle and the connective tissue around them.
It begins with a conversation about where the problem is, how long it's been there and what makes it better or worse. That matters — tension in the shoulders caused by eight hours at a laptop needs a different approach to tension caused by heavy lifting.
Treatment then works progressively deeper rather than starting hard. Warming the tissue first makes the deeper work far more effective and considerably more comfortable. You'll be asked about pressure regularly throughout.
Deep tissue work should feel like a manageable, "good" discomfort — the sort you can breathe through. Sharp pain or having to tense up against it means the pressure is too much, and it will be adjusted straight away. Effective treatment does not require you to suffer.
Feeling tender for a day or two is common, especially after a first session or where an area was particularly tight. Most people notice looser movement immediately, with the full benefit becoming clear over the following couple of days. Water, gentle movement and avoiding heavy training for 24 hours all help.
If you want to switch off and unwind, relaxation massage is the better choice. If you're training regularly and want recovery-focused work, sports massage may suit you more. Deep tissue is for persistent, localised tension that hasn't responded to anything else. If you're unsure, just say so when booking and the session will be shaped accordingly.
